Virginia Barrett holds an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and is a graduate of the University of Virginia (where she was a student of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Wright). She is the author of many books of poetry including CROSSING HAIGHT, I JUST WEAR MY WINGS—COLLECTED POEMS OF AN ASPIRING MYSTIC, Radiance—poems from Mendocino, and Infinite Love—poems from a course in meditation and the travel memoir Mbira Maker Blues—a healing journey to Zimbabwe. Her collection, Between Looking, is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press (2019). Barrett is the editor of two anthologies of contemporary San Francisco poets: OCCUPY SF—POEMS FROM THE MOVEMENT and Feather Floating on the Water—poems for our children. Her work has most recently appeared in the Writer's Chronicle, Narrative, Roar: Literature and Revolution by Feminist People, Ekphrastic Review, Weaving the Terrain (Dos Gatos Press), and Poetry of Resistance: Voices for Social Justice (University of Arizona Press). She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. A direct descendent of 17th-century lyric poet Edmund Waller (popularizer of the "heroic couplet"), as well as Victorian social reformer Dr. Kate Waller Barrett and literary bibliophile Clifton Waller Barrett (a friend and patron of poet Robert Frost), she keeps the ancestral literary-activist flame burning brightly in an accessible, contemporary voice.
